Johnny & Elle hand make each item by hand by utilizing over 30 years of combined experience in the industry. Each recipe is uniquely Johnny & Elle, beautifully balanced recipes using a variety of sweeteners, flours, flavors, and chocolates based entirely on the outcome of each product. Johnny & Elle painstakingly develop each recipe to be the best recipe that particular cookie can be, painstakingly developing recipes by changing how much Raw Honey or Pure Cane Sugar or Molasses to use in each recipe. This true artisan development assures the best possible outcome of our gourmet product line.

Nearly every product from Johnny And Elles is an often long, experimental process in which Johnny get’s out a spreadsheet, takes notes, explores flour types of fat content, noting tastes and textural differences, and creating a unique product that is distinctly Johnny And Elles. However, the creation of Maurice Lenell Pinwheel Cookies had a different approach.
Johnny And Elle went back to memory, since Maurice Lenell is no longer around, and copycat recipes online, though they may be fine cookies, are not Maurice Lenell Pinwheel Cookies. For over a decade Johnny had been thinking about these cookies, wanting to take a stab at recreating them (even though Johnny notoriously likes to work on his own, creating something unique), for the goal of this project was to replicate something that already exists. But, not to make something that already exists better, but to recreate something that no longer exists. Once the recipe was spot on, it wasn’t the intention to sell them, it was only Johnny’s intention to enjoy them.
Turns out there are plenty of Chicagoans and Chicago transplants that truly miss the stiff, rich, slightly salty, hint of cocoa, iconic and classic Maurice Lenell Pinwheel Cookies. With Johnny’s background in Chicago food, it only makes sense to offer Johnny And Elles recreated Maurice Lenell Pinwheel Cookies. It is especially fitting to be offering them for the holidays, for that’s when Johnny had them growing up. These are truly the best holiday gifts from classic Chicagoans.

Each of our Decadent Honey Shortbread Cookies aremade by hand, from scratch with the best curation of ingredients. Shortbread are wonderful for their simplicity, made without egg or leaveners, they are a very straightforward cookie and we embrace them for that.

Warm nutty toasted walnuts expel oil that enhances rich butterfat to coat your taste buds. Sweetened by pure cane sugar and raw honey to balance Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate, aromatic raw honey and earthy whole wheat flour play beautifully with walnut oils and butter, and a peacefully warm finish to our Toasted Walnut Bittersweet Chocolate Cookies.
This is one of our texturally contrasted cookies crafted in symbiosis with nuts, chocolate, and pure coarse cane sugar rounded the earthy and sweet and aromatic flavors with crispy and crunchy and chewy texture.

What makes ours excellent: Sometimes in a cookie, it’s the varying textural landscape that outshines the flavors of a cookie. This cookie was developed to be in sharp contrast to traditional cookies made with white sugar, white flour, low butterfat chocolate chip cookies. Added whole wheat flour, toasted walnuts, raw honey, and rich butter make this a textural and flavorful contrast event.
